How nutrition and cancer are linked
What we eat and our risk of cancer are related. The constituents of diet can be toxic to the body, leading to cell damage. This includes diets high in salt, sugar and processed food. Alcohol is another example of how what we consume may contribute to cancer. Being overweight increases the risk of several types of cancer including colorectal cancer, pancreatic cancer, breast cancer and cancer of the uterus. In contrast, there are many foods that may help prevent cancer through their natural anti-oxidant properties and their high quantities of vitamins and minerals.
Six ways you can lower the risk of cancer through nutrition
- Eat plants and lots of them. Think leafy greens, broccoli, tomatoes, berries and carrots.
- Get enough fibre. The bulk of your fibre must come from fruit and vegetables, but wholesome grains will help with fibre intake as well.
- Watch salt. Be conscious of reducing your sodium intake and beware of hidden sources of salt.
- Cut sugar. Sugar is virtually poisonous; therefore, keep it to a minimum.
- Drink water. Tea and coffee may have some cancer-fighting properties, but make water your number one go-to drink. Keep your alcohol intake within healthy limits.
- Eat whole foods. Highly processed food products contain several compounds that may increase the odds of cancer formation, so keep your diet as unprocessed and wholesome as possible.
