Hand hygiene 101

Did you know that many diseases are spread through dirty hands? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, clean hands saves lives. Find out more about a proper handwashing technique for you and your family:

What is Malaria?

“Washing” hands by simply running water over them or sometimes a dab of soap is not enough. Proper handwashing involves these manoeuvres:

  • Applying soap and wetting hands with water
  • Rubbing hands palm to palm
  • Rubbing the palm over the back of the hand (for both hands)
  • Washing the webs of the fingers by interlacing them palm to palm
  • Washing the backs of the fingers with fingers interlocked
  • Washing both thumbs
  • Rinsing hands with water
  • Drying hands thoroughly with a towel
  • Using the towel to turn off the tap

Proper handwashing frequency

There is no excuse for not washing your hands after using the toilet, but toileting is not the only time that handwashing is important. Consider all the microbes your hands are exposed to in daily situations, and act accordingly. If you’ve been handling money (which was handled by countless others), your hands need to be washed. If you are about to eat or plan to handle pets, trash or mess, it’s a good idea to wash your hands. Even if you’ve been sneezing, coughing or blowing your nose, you should wash your hands. Get everyone in the family to be aware of the cleanliness of their hands throughout each day.

Quick fixes

There are times when you will be faced with no running water where you are, but this doesn’t mean forgetting about hand hygiene altogether. Try to carry a hand sanitiser along with you on outings. These products are not as effective as handwashing with water, but they can assist in killing some of the germs that may be lurking on your palms.
