The lungs are located on either side of the heart. These organs are responsible for the exchange of gases that happens when we breathe, a function vital for survival. In humans, the right lung has three lobes and the left lung has two lobes. The diaphragm is the muscle that powers the air movement through the lungs as we inhale and exhale. In addition to respiration, air movement through the windpipe and lungs allows the vocal cords to function, so we can use our voices.
